Why taking “a piece of home” with you when you travel matters
They are not essential things for traveling, but they are essential for traveling better.
Small things that help me travel calmly and feel at home
Traveling is not just about moving from one place to another. For me, traveling calmly has a lot to do with feeling comfortable, safe, and a little bit at home, even when I’m far away.
Over the years, I’ve learned that you don’t need many things, just the right ones.Small objects, simple gestures, minimal routines that stay with me and help me adapt more easily to the journey, the accommodation, and the change.
This is my emotional and practical travel kit: small things that take up very little space, but make a big difference when you’re away.Small things that help me travel

☕ My herbal teas (this one is sacred)
Yes, yes, I know — it may sound silly. But I promise you, I never travel without a few tea bags of my favorite blend.
There’s something almost magical about arriving at a hotel — it can be cold, impersonal, it doesn’t matter — and making yourself a cup of tea. Holding the warm mug, breathing in that familiar aroma… and suddenly, just like that, you feel at home.
It’s my landing ritual. My way of telling my body:“Relax. Even if we’re far away, we’re still safe.”

🌿 Aromatherapy for better sleep
Then there’s aromatherapy. I always carry a small roll-on with essential oils for the evening, especially for those nights when you have to sleep on a pillow that isn’t yours and falling asleep feels harder than usual.
Our sense of smell is incredible, isn’t it?It’s the fastest way to calm the nervous system.Honestly, it works wonders.

🎧 Headphones (or earplugs): my bubble of calm
Another essential is headphones — or a good pair of earplugs. This is something I learned fairly recently.
Sometimes, the greatest comfort in the world is simply disconnecting from noise.Whether you’re on a crowded train, in a café with loud music, or on a plane.
You put on your headphones, play your favorite music… or choose silence. And it’s like creating your own little bubble of peace.A real luxury.
📖 My travel journal (light and simple)
I also always bring my travel journal. In my case, it’s my tablet, where I keep a good book so I can travel lighter.
But writing helps me enormously. At Breakingbel, you know we often talk about looking more carefully, about paying closer attention. So at the end of the day, I write a couple of lines about something that surprised me, something beautiful I noticed.
It doesn’t have to be anything special. But it helps me process the journey more calmly, without running on autopilot.

💧 Mindful hydration (the final little treat)
And finally, mindful hydration. It sounds a bit fancy, but it really isn’t.
It’s simply carrying a facial mist or a hand cream with a scent I truly enjoy. The air on planes and in hotels dries out the skin so much, and this small gesture — applying cream slowly, breathing in a scent you love — feels like an instant comfort.
It may seem like nothing, but it makes all the difference.
✨ In the end…
What I’ve learned is that taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity if you want to keep exploring the world with energy and curiosity.
We travel to find ourselves, not to lose ourselves in stress and come home completely drained.
These small essentials help me keep my rituals, feel good in my own skin, even when I’m far away. And that, my friend, is priceless.
Traveling light is not about carrying less, but about carrying what truly takes care of you.
If you think this might help someone, feel free to share it.
