Age spots or sun damage? Ideas to help keep them from getting worse

Older adults enjoying the beach while protecting their skin from the sun

I thought sunscreen was enough… until I understood this

For a long time, I thought spots were simply part of getting older.

I saw it in friends and people around me, every summer more sun, more time at the beach… and over the years, more spots.

But I also started to notice something curious.

Many of them had quite a lot of spots.

And I had very few.

Not because I had better skin. Not because of genetics.

Simply because I had been doing something very basic for years:using SPF 50+ sunscreen every single day and avoiding strong sun exposure whenever possible.

That’s when I understood something important.

Spots don’t appear only because of age.

They appear, above all, because of years of accumulated sun exposure.

And that completely changes how you think about taking care of your skin.

Protecting the skin from the inside: the basic idea

What is known as oral photoprotection involves taking supplements that help the skin defend itself better against sun damage.

They don’t block UV rays like sunscreen does. That’s important to understand.

What they do is:

  • help fight cellular damage

  • reduce inflammation

  • support the skin’s natural defenses

  • slow down, to some extent, sun-related skin aging

They are not a shield. They are support.

Where I live, we have strong sun for a large part of the year, and I’ve seen what happens when people don’t protect themselves properly.

Even now, if I have to be outside during peak sun hours, I try to wear light clothing that covers as much skin as possible.

Simple habits make a difference over time.

The most common mistake I see

The most important thing to keep in mind is this:

these supplements do not replace sunscreen.

If someone stops using sunscreen thinking these capsules do the same job, they are making a mistake.

The easiest way to understand it is:

Sunscreen → blocks the rays from the outsideOral photoprotection → supports the skin from the inside

Together, they work better.Separately, they are limited.

What these supplements usually contain

There are many brands, but most include similar ingredients.

What you should look for is:

  • Polypodium leucotomos, a plant extract widely used in dermatology

  • Antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamin C and vitamin E

  • Beta-carotene

  • Lycopene

They all have something in common, they help the skin cope better with sun-related stress.

Nothing miraculous. But useful in certain situations.

Are they really worth it?

It depends.

They are not essential for everyone, but they may make sense if:

  • you spend a lot of time in the sun

  • you have sensitive skin

  • you are concerned about spots

  • you are undergoing skin treatments

  • you want extra protection

The key is to have realistic expectations.

This is not a quick fix.It is a complement.

What you should keep in mind before starting

Before buying supplements, remember this, what truly makes the biggest difference over the years is not capsules, but habits.

What really makes the difference over time

  • using sunscreen every day

  • avoiding strong sun during peak hours

  • being consistent, not perfect

  • protecting your skin even in winter

These habits are the foundation.

Everything else is a complement.

If you decide to use supplements, keep this in mind

  • they do not replace sunscreen

  • they do not prevent sunburn on their own

  • they work better with consistent use

  • it is always a good idea to seek professional advice if you have doubts

  • if you take regular medication or have a chronic condition, consult your doctor before starting

It’s not complicated.

You just need to understand what they are for.

The idea that changed my mindset

For years, I thought sun care simply meant putting on sunscreen when you went to the beach.

Now I see it differently.

Taking care of your skin from the sun means:

  • using external protection

  • thinking about long-term skin health

  • and in some cases, supporting the skin from the inside

I don’t do anything extreme.

But I am more aware.

And in the end, that’s what this is really about not doing everything perfectly, but doing things a little better each day.

Take this idea with you

Spots don’t appear overnight.

They are the result of years of accumulated sun exposure.

That’s why the best protection is not a single action.

It’s the sum of small habits:using sunscreen, avoiding strong sun, and being consistent.

You don’t have to be perfect. But you do have to be consistent.
